Welcome to Energy Materials Safety Engineering Lab (EMSEL) at the Incheon National University. We are interested in materials engineering, materials development, and solid-state chemistry with a particular attention to the safety of energy materials. Major research involves electrode developments for stability enhancement of lithium-ion batteries, electrode-electrolyte interphase engineering, investigating thermal runway mechanism, and a wide range of safety engineering for lithium-ion batteries and energy storage systems, including their manufacturing facilities.

Our group focuses on the materials engineering for flame retardant electrolytes and separators, and coating treatments to enhance battery safety and performance.

We aim to develop a fundamental understanding of the capacity fading and degradation mechanism of lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion battery fires triggered by thermal runaway is another key research of this group.

EMSEL group also studies the interphase environment between the electrode and electrolyte (e.g. SEI, CEI) that determines the electrochemical performance, as well as the operation safety.
